Help us Help the AnimalsGet InvolvedEvery year millions of unwanted, abused and neglected animals are euthanized in both private non-profit and municipal shelters across the United States. Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Blount County, wants to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. A modern Animal Care Center with educational outreach programs addressing the need for aggressive Spay/Neuter initiatives is just the beginning; and that's where we are starting. SMACF is spearheading the construction of a modern Animal Care Center with educational outreach programs that address the need for aggressive Spay/Neuter initiatives. We have already secured $550,000 in County set-aside funding, Gift-in-Kind donations from local businesses, grants, and individual cash donations. This is enough to get the project underway (yes, it has started!) but we are going to need another $900,000 to complete construction and install all necessary systems and equipment. We will also have to hire an able and experienced shelter director to oversee operations. Eventually we expect every jurisdiction within Blount County to become involved with this new animal shelter through participatory funding, animal control services, and shelter oversight. The result will be a high profile operation for the animals that will be centrally located and accessible by all citizens. View our Blount County Animal Center Presentation to learn more about our comprehensive plan.
What Can You Do to Help? We are searching for donors who want to support our animal welfare mission. If you'd like to contribute financially please visit our donations page for details. Businesses with goods and services to offer us also have many opportunities to help; our Capital Campaign opportunities can be found here. Our hope is that every company with significant business interests in Blount County will join our Construction Hall of Fame! It's time, and it is the right thing to do for the animals. Last year alone more than 3,300 animals in the County were taken to the outdated Maryville Dog Pound that is undersized and understaffed. Many more County animals were simply abandoned and left to fend for themselves or face certain death. This is totally unacceptable and the citizens of Blount County are working tirelessly to turn things around – today, not in two or three or four years from now when construction costs will even be greater.
OTHER OPTIONS: I. Join our Board of Directors If you love animals and want to help our cause, the Board of Directors of SMACF is looking for able, energetic and self-driven citizens to join our governing board. Our new shelter construction project takes time, effort, and huge organizational skills and talents to accomplish. We are also engaged in many fund-raising activities, all benefitting the shelter construction project. So we do need your helping hand! We especially need people with (1) fund-raising experience; (2) animal welfare experience; (3) extensive community connections; (4) an ability and willingness to go out and talk with local service organizations and businesses about our organization and its mission; (5) experience in the construction and oversight operations of an animal shelter; (6) a knowledge of Tennessee animal laws and animal control officer training needs; (7) an interest in working with school-aged children to tell them about SMACF and how they can help... The list goes on. Please contact us if you can bring to the table these or other skills that can help us improve the welfare of animals in our community. But, wait, there is more...we also work closely with some other community-based animal welfare initiatives that you could also partner with, if serving on a board of directors like ours is not something that interests you. You can find a list of those worthy organizations here.
II. Send Cash instead of Flowers to Honor Loved Ones In lieu of sending sending flowers, you could request that friends and family send contributions to SMACF to honor your deceased loved ones. Mail to: Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation (SMACF) P.O. Box 7218 Maryville, TN 37802
